Trat Remembrance Day – Honoring History, Celebrating Home

Every year on March 23, the people of Trat come together to celebrate Trat Remembrance Day—a deeply meaningful occasion that honors a pivotal moment in the province’s history and pays tribute to the great kindness of King Rama V.

Why is this date so important? On March 23, 1906, King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) made a historic decision to preserve the identity and integrity of Trat. In a peaceful diplomatic exchange, Thailand ceded the territories of Battambang, Siem Reap, and Sisophon to France in return for the restoration of Trat Province, nearby islands, and Dan Sai—areas rich in culture and national pride.

To honor this remarkable moment, Trat hosts a five-day celebration each year filled with cultural performances, local food, historical exhibitions, and community pride. It's not just a remembrance—it's a vibrant reflection of how much the people of Trat treasure their roots.

Ever noticed the meaning behind Trat’s Provincial Seal? 🐟⛵ It features Ko Chang—the province’s largest island—along with sailboats and pontoons that represent the local way of life. These symbols reflect Trat’s rich fishing heritage and its long-standing role as a gateway for trade and travel. It’s more than a seal—it’s the story of a community shaped by the sea.
